Health Tip of the Month: Stay Hydrated!

Health Tip of the Month – Stay Hydrated!

Did you know the average human body is 50%-60% water? So when this percentage drops, the body gets dehydrated.

What is dehydration?

Dehydration is when your body doesn’t get enough fluid into it to keep it functioning correctly. Alternatively, it can occur when you loose to much fluid (EG Excessive Sweating)

What causes dehydration?

  • Vomiting or Diarrhoea
  • Sweating
  • Colds/Fever
  • Consumption of too much alcohol
  • Medications such as Diuretics.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Thirsty
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Fast heart rate and low blood pressure
  • Fever
  • Drowsy, confused.

Some ‘cool’ tips to keep you hydrated.

Make it bubble. No this isn’t a marketing pitch for sodastream! But bubbles make everything better right?.. So if your aren’t much of a water drinker try mineral water instead.

Add some fruit. Craving a sweet sugary drink, or just don’t like the taste of plan water, muddling fruit makes the water taste yum!

Tea (black or herbal) makes a great substitute for water.

Get a funky drink bottle.

So why do myotherapists keep harping on about drinking water after a treatment?

Getting a Myotherapy treatment is very dehydrating. Working on muscles pumps fluid out of the soft tissue into your blood stream, with a one way ticket to your kidneys (that’s why you sometime need the toilet after a treatment). Therefore you need to replenish the body with the fluids lost.

The body naturally produces waste in the muscles, due to day to day activities and exercise. When the muscles are tight there is a decrease in circulation to the area and thus inhibiting the bodies ability to flush out those wastes/toxins.
